    The International Civil Society Action Network (ICAN) is a global non-profit organization dedicated to advancing inclusive and sustainable peace in countries impacted by violent conflict, extremism, militarism, and shrinking civic space. Recognizing the gendered dimensions of conflict and the essential role of women peacebuilders, ICAN’s mission is implemented through policy engagement, thought leadership, and strategic support for local actors.
    ICAN leads and supports the Women’s Alliance for Security Leadership (WASL), a global network of grassroots women-led peacebuilding organizations. Through WASL and other initiatives, ICAN provides gender-responsive analysis, operational guidance, and communications support to amplify women’s voices in peace and security processes

    Internship Period: September 2025 – January 2026 (Flexible dates)
    Location: Remote
    Time Commitment: Part-time (minimum 20 hours/week) or Full-time

    POSITION OVERVIEW
    ICAN is currently seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Communications and Social Media Intern to join its team for the Fall 2025 cycle. This internship is designed for individuals interested in the intersection of gender, peacebuilding, and strategic communications.
    The selected intern will work under the guidance of ICAN’s Communications Officer, who is responsible for managing the organization’s digital strategy, content development, public outreach, and media engagement. The intern will support content creation, research, event coverage, and analytics across various communication channels to elevate ICAN’s voice and visibility globally.
    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
    The Communications Intern will contribute to a range of tasks across digital communications, campaign support, and research. Primary responsibilities may include:
    Social Media Content and Creation
    • Assist in developing and refining campaign ideas to boost engagement and outreach.
    • Create and schedule social media posts, including drafting captions and designing visuals or multimedia content.
    • Monitor conversations and emerging topics related to Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) across digital platforms, academic publications, and news outlets.
    • Support the drafting and formatting of newsletters or targeted email campaigns.

    Event and Campaign Support
    • Provide live event coverage, including drafting live-tweets, recording key quotes, and taking notes.
    • Assist in producing content related to the She Builds Peace campaign, highlighting key messages and stories from WASL members.

    Research and Writing
    • Contribute to the development of Innovative Peace Stories by gathering background research on relevant themes and the work of WASL partners.
    • Support interviews, write summaries, and assist in drafting articles that showcase peacebuilding efforts led by women.

    Analytics and Reporting
    • Collect and analyse data on ICAN’s digital engagement across platforms.
    • Assist in preparing regular reports on communications performance and suggest improvements based on analytics insights.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education
    • Graduate students and recent graduates are preferred; exceptional undergraduate candidates may be considered.
    • Candidates specialising in communications, international relations, gender studies, or peace and conflict studies are strongly encouraged to apply.

    Skills and Experience
    • Strong interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity.
    • Demonstrated interest or knowledge in gender, peace and conflict, and preventing/countering violent extremism.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, and SharePoint.
    • Familiarity with social media platforms, including Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube.
    • Experience using tools such as Canva for content creation and Hootsuite for scheduling and managing posts.
    • Ability to analyse and interpret social media metrics.
    • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
    • Creative, adaptable, and proactive mindset.
    • Experience working with nonprofit organizations is an asset.
    • Language skills in Arabic, Farsi, or French are a plus.
